Steblewo, a small village in the Gdańsk Pomerania region, hides one of the most fascinating and mysterious ruins in the area – the old church standing as a testament to medieval architecture and history. My photographs capture the charm, mystery, and unique stories connected to this site, spanning several centuries.

A Historical Journey Back to the 14th Century
The church in Steblewo was begun in the 14th century by the Teutonic Knights. Originally serving as a Catholic church, it became an Evangelical church from 1584 until 1945, under the patronage of the city of Gdańsk. Its history is marked by wars and destruction, including damage during the Swedish invasion in 1628, though it was subsequently rebuilt with Gdańsk's support.
Architecture and Architectural Details
The remaining walls testify to the former church’s grandeur. The sturdy masonry and high Gothic-shaped windows evoke a sense of timelessness. The ruins of the tower and the exterior structures reveal what was once an impressive edifice—both functional and symbolic. Fragments of ornate decorations and 18th-century frescoes can still be seen, adding historical richness.
A Tale of Fire and Destruction
In 1945, the church was devastated by fire—probably set by Soviet troops or caused by the collapsing front in the chaos of war. The remaining ruins stand as a poignant reminder of the brutality of war and the region’s turbulent history. Nevertheless, local enthusiasts, supported by EU funds and other sources, have been working for years to preserve and protect what remains.
